Labette County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit

Deputy Brian Sui/ K-9 Benny

The Labette County Sheriff's K-9 team plays a vital role in enhancing law enforcement capabilities within the patrol environment, especially in high-risk situations where the safety of officers and the general public is at stake. This specialized unit consists of one dedicated handler and their canine partner, who work together to address various challenges that require heightened vigilance and expertise.

K-9 officers are deployed in critical operations, including building and open area searches, tracking suspects, locating evidence, and conducting search and rescue missions. Additionally, they are extensively trained in drug interdiction, providing invaluable assistance in the fight against illegal narcotics. These remarkable canines are also equipped to protect their handlers, capable of apprehending violent or dangerous individuals to prevent escapes. The K-9 team remains on call 24 hours a day, ensuring swift response to any situation.

While a significant portion of the team's time is devoted to patrol duties, narcotics detection, and maintenance training, they also engage with the community through demonstrations for schools, children's groups, and local organizations. Their expertise is frequently sought by other law enforcement agencies, highlighting the K-9 unit's reputation for excellence.

Reliability in job performance is critical for the success of the K-9 unit. To maintain the highest standards, each dog and handler undergoes ongoing proficiency training, committing to a rigorous schedule of four hours of maintenance training each week. This dedication ensures that every K-9 team member remains sharp, reinforcing the skills learned in their initial training academies.

Whether it's seizing illegal drugs from traffickers, apprehending dangerous felons, or locating lost individuals to reunite them with their families, the Labette County Sheriff's Office K-9 team stands ready to serve, exemplifying commitment, professionalism, and a strong bond between handler and canine.
